Centre to bring bill in Parliament for unifying municipal bodies in Delhi

SC dismisses plea against 3-year minimum service in remote areas rule of West Bengal for doctors
THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS| Supreme Court: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea of doctors challenging a notification of the West Bengal government extending a condition of three years’ minimum service in remote/difficult/rural areas for being considered as eligible for the in-service quota in Post Graduate courses. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant noted the submission of the West Bengal government that only 40 per cent of seats are reserved for in-service quota while the rest of seats are open for the candidates.
Liability to pay compensation on death of worker arises immediately after demise: Supreme Court
THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS| Supreme Court: The liability to pay compensation on the part of the employer would arise immediately on the death of a workman and the interest would also be levied from the date of demise and not from the date of the order passed by the Commissioner, the Supreme Court said on Friday. In the verdict, the apex court dealt with the provisions of the Employee’s Compensation Act, 1923 while coming to the rescue of a family whose bread-earner had died of a snake bite in 2009 while cutting sugarcane at a field in Solapur district of Maharashtra. A bench of justices M R Shah and B V Nagarathna termed as “unsustainable” the Bombay High Court’s order. The Aurangabad bench of the high court had upheld the award of Rs 3.06 lakh to the family of the workers.
Madras High Court rejects plea to restrain disinvestment of Air India before settling employees pleas
THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS| Madras High Court The Madras High Court on Friday rejected a plea from Air Corporation Employees Union to restrain the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation from disinvesting its 100 per cent shares in Air India Limited to Tata Group without taking appropriate measures to protect the terms and conditions of service and the rights of the employees. Justice V Parthiban rejected the plea while dismissing a writ petition from the union, by its president C Udayashankar.
Allahabad High Court issues show-cause notice to Universal Publisher Lexis-Nexis
THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS| Allahabad High Court: The Allahabad High Court has sought the stand of noted law book publisher Lexis-Nexis of Universal publishers for allegedly misleading the members of the bar and bench for not publishing up-to-date legal provisions along with the latest amendments of a particular law. A bench of Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Prakash Padia issued the show cause notice observing that a substantial time of the court was wasted owing to Lexis-Nexis failure to keep its publications up to date.
Google, Meta face EU probe into possible competition breach
THE NEW INDIAN EXPRESS| Corporate Law: The European Union threatened to crack down on an agreement between Google and Facebook parent Meta for online display advertising services, saying Friday that the deal may breach the bloc’s rules on fair competition. The EU’s competition watchdog opened a probe into a 2018 pact involving the participation of Meta’s “Audience Network” in Google’s “Open Bidding” program.
