New Appointment
In exercise of the powers conferred by rule 5 of the Law Officers of High Court of Madras and its Bench at Madurai (Appointment) Rules, 2017, the Governor of Tamil Nadu hereby appoints Tvl.V.Krishnamurthy and Amit Anand Tiwari, Advocates, as the Additional Advocates General of Tamil Nadu. The Additional Advocates General of Tamil Nadu will look after the cases pertaining to the State of Tamil Nadu before the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi.

Mr Tiwari has done his law and post-graduation in law from Delhi University and has been practising before Supreme Court since 2001. He was junior to Late Mr A Sharan, former ASG.
Mr Tiwari has appeared in various high stake cases of constitutional importance, such as the 2002 Presidential Reference relating to Gujarat elections, M.Nagaraj case where he defended reservation in promotion and recent Maratha Reservation matter. In the matter where Supreme Court issued notice to TN assembly speaker, others on DMK’s plea for disqualification of 11 AIADMK MLAs. Kapil Sibal and lawyer Amit Anand Tiwari appeared for the DMK.
He had the distinction of representing the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India before the Central Information Commission during 2008-2010. He worked as Counsel for UoI from 2004-2009 and as the Deputy Advocate General for Uttarakhand from 2016-2018. Mr Tiwari is Special Counsel for CBI and has appeared in various sensitive cases of Coal scams.
He has been representing DMK and its leaders in important cases, especially those pertaining to Constitutional and Election Law, including anti-defection law. Recently, he successfully argued against breach of privilege notices issued to Thiru. M.K. Stalin and 20 DMK MLAs before the High Court of Madras. He is also actively involved in advocates’ welfare issues and has been an elected Bar representative in SC from 2014-2016.
Article 165: Advocate General for the State
The Advocate General of a State is a Constitutional post and authority duly appointed as per Article 165 of the Constitution of India. The authority and function of the Advocate General are also specified in the Constitution of India under Articles 165 and 177.
- The Governor of each State shall appoint a person who is qualified to be appointed as a Judge of a High Court to be Advocate General for the State.
- It shall be the duty of the Advocate General to give advice to the Government of concerned State upon such legal matters and to perform such other duties of a legal character; as may from time to time be referred or assigned to him by the Governor and to discharge the functions conferred on him by or under this constitution or any other law for the time being in force.
- The Advocate General shall hold office during the pleasure of the Governor, and shall receive such remuneration as the Governor may determine.
