President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated an additional building complex of the Supreme Court, spread on 12.19 acres. The new complex consists of six blocks abutting Pragati Maidan and where the once famous amusement park Appu Ghar stood and is located opposite the present Supreme Court complex.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, judges of the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Attorney General KK Venugopal were present at the inaugural function held in a sprawling auditorium in the new complex.
This new building has five functional blocks and one service block.
These blocks are four to nine storeys high and have a three-level basement with a car parking capacity of about 1,800 car units.
The need for an additional court complex was felt in order to cope up with the space constraints in the Supreme Court Complex, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.
The shape of the building along with the European style pillars that rise from the ground level in a similar colour scheme and the sandstone external cladding depicts the influence that the existing SC complex had on the new building. It has been designed to maximise the use of available sunlight, air and water.
It consists of two world-class auditoriums with a seating capacity of about 620 and 250 persons and it also houses a conference-cum-meeting room.
