Disburse Pension, PPE, Face Masks to the Elderly: SUPREME COURT

TRIBUNE (August 04, 2020): The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that pension to elderly persons should be disbursed on time and those living in old age homes be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitisers and face masks to protect them from COVID-19 pandemic.

Contempt Proceedings against Prashant Bhushan: SUPREME COURT reserves order after ‘muted’ hearing

TRIBUNE (August 4, 2020): The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its orders on the acceptability of a statement submitted by activist-lawyer Prashant Bhushan who is facing criminal contempt proceedings for his 2009 statement allegedly scandalising the judiciary. The development happened on a day when 16 eminent members of the civil society, including activist Aruna Roy, moved the Supreme Court seeking to intervene in the matter, contending contempt proceedings against Bhushan amounted to stifling free speech.

SUPREME COURT asks Centre to Start Work soon on Smog Tower Installation Project in Delhi

SUPREME COURT instructs Centre, states to provide Timely Pension, Essentials to Senior Citizens amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

DNA (August 4, 2020): The bench was headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan. He asked the state governments to take the necessary steps as senior citizens living alone during the COVID-19 pandemic are in need of these amenities. Apex court also urged the state governments to maintain proper COVID-19 safety precautions in old age homes. The bench further emphasised on the fact that caregivers there are well equipped with masks, personal protection equipment (PPE) kits, and sanitisers.

Kulbhushan Jadhav Case: ISLAMABAD HIGH COURT directs Pakistan Govt to ‘authorise’ India to appoint a lawyer

DNA (August 3, 2020)“The Government of Pakistan shall once again inform Commander Jadhav regarding his rights under Article 36 of the Convention and the judgment of the International Court will also be brought to his attention. He shall be specifically informed regarding his right to avail the statutory remedy provided under the Ordinance of 2020 and to authorize the Government of India to arrange legal representation on his behalf,” the high court in its order said.

A top Pakistani court has named three senior lawyers as amici curiae in the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav as it ordered the Pakistan government to give “another chance” to India to appoint a counsel for the death-row prisoner.

DNA (July 29, 2020): The Centre on Wednesday further extended the deadline for filing the income tax return for the FY 2019-20 from July 31 to September 30, 2020. A notification to this effect was issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Wednesday.  The decision has been taken in view of the constraints due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Income Tax Department said.
