The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre and the Assam government on a plea seeking issuance of Aadhaar cards to 21 lakh people, whose biometric data were on hold despite their names being included in the NRC.
In her petition, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev said a grave situation has arose in Assam due to the fact that nearly 21 lakh people, whose names were admitted into the final supplementary list of the NRC in August 2019, were not being provided their Aadhaar.
The petition contended that the non-availability of Aadhaar was causing disadvantage to these applicants in obtaining education access, application for jobs, PAN cards, ration cards, opening of bank accounts among others.
