SC judges

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Tuesday recommended the names of five High Court judges for appointment as Supreme Court judges.

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Tuesday recommended the names of five High Court judges for appointment as Supreme Court judges.

  • The judges who have been recommended for the elevation to the apex court are: Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court; Justice Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice of Patna High Court; Justice PV Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice of Manipur High Court; Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Judge of Patna High Court; and Justice Manoj Misa, Judge of Allahabad High Court.
  • Currently, the Supreme Court has 28 judges while the sanctioned strength is 34. Once these recommendations are cleared by the Central Government, the working strength of the Supreme Court will rise to 33.  Apart from CJI Chandrachud, senior most five judges were also part of the Tuesday’s collegium meeting.
  • Normally, five judges form collegium including CJI. The change in the collegium has occurred due to the fact that after the CJI, none of the four senior-most apex court judges — justices SK Kaul, S Abdul Nazeer, KM Joseph and MR Shah — would become the head of the judiciary. This time the total number of collegium members went to six, with the entry of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who is in line to succeed Justice Chandrachud as the CJI on November 11, 2024.
