About usDr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Puducherry formerly known as Government Law College Pondicherry was established by the Government of Puducherry in the year 1972 and has been imparting high standard legal education to students since then. Presently, the Institution is affiliated to Pondicherry University (A Central University). Prior to its affiliation to Pondicherry University in 1986-87, the Institution was affiliated to Madras University. The present campus of the College is located at Kalapet, the outskirts of the city of Pondicherry with a green campus sprawling about 28 acres with requisite infrastructure.

The institution has started imparting instruction for the five years integrated Law course i.e. B.A.LL.B. from the academic year 1983-1984. In addition to that, three-year degree course in Law i.e. LL.B. was introduced successfully in the year 2007. The institution is also imparting instruction leading to one Year Postgraduate Diploma in French Law i.e. PGDFL which is being taught at its old campus (City Centre). To copy up with the growing demand for legal education and adopt to the changing pattern of teaching and research in Law. Three Year LLB. Evening course was started for the academic year 1991-1992, but it was wound up by a directive from bar council of Indian. Full-time Ph.D. course was been started from the academic year 1997-1998.

Introduction of new Job oriented diploma course in Law, the establishment of comparative Law institute and developing exchange programs with some of the universities in French are the plans of the institution to be implemented during the coming academic year. The institution has been making rapid progress in various fields of teaching and research. It is expected that with the renovative content and course curriculum in legal education, the institution would progress further and render significant contribution to society.

The College was initially functioning in Bussy Street presently known as Sardar Vallabbhai Patel Salai and it was shifted to the present campus at Kalapet in the year 2005. The present campus has an area of 28 acres with Administrative Block, Academic Block, Library, Conference Hall, Seminar Hall, Moot Court, Auditorium, Computer Lab cum Digital Library, smart Class room, Boys’ Hostel and Girls’ Hostel Gymnasium. The Academic Block is exclusively for teaching the students on various law and non-law subjects. The Library of the College is one of the equipped Libraries in India for law subject and it has a collection of nearly 40,000 Books and journals. To equip the students with the digital technology, the library has been upgraded to digital library. A separate Students Centre has been constructed recently. The Students Centre has the provision of canteen, alumni association, gymnasium, smart class, dispensary, post office and bank. Steps are being taken to operationalise other facilities in the near future.

It may proudly be mentioned that the Institution has been conducting various academic programmes including National Moot Court Competition since its inception and so far conducted 45 National Level Moot Court Competitions. In addition, 5 Regional Language (Tamil) Moot Court Competitions and one All India Women Moot Court Competition exclusively for girl students. Our College has also functioned as Regional Administrator for 16 years continuously for selection of Indian Team to represent India in Jessup Philips International Law Moot Court held at USA. It is also pertinent to mention that our College is the only institution in India to have conducted 45 National Level Moot Court Competitions for the law students across the country.

The College has good alumni records who have occupied key positions like Judges in High Court, notable advocates in Supreme Court of India as well as in High Courts, other legal profession including the private sector and as academicians in Universities and Colleges.
