Government Law College, Coimbatore

The name of Government Law College, Coimbatore (GLC CBE) is written in letters of gold in the history of Legal Education in Tamil Nadu. Since 1979, this institution has been producing legal luminaries who have adored chairs of great responsibilities throughout the globe. The college is most preferred for its natural location in the feet of Western Ghats. The College works on a mission with a vision of a futurist approach. The talents of the students were brought to light by various committees namely Moot Court Competition Committee, Cultural and Competition Committee, Legal Intellectual Committee, and Sports.

On the whole, apart from academics meticulous care is taken to shape the students in all walks of life and give society the best responsible citizens. The Post Graduate Departments LL.M (Business Law) and LL.M (Taxation Laws) studies also excel in all spheres of activities and many of them have adored the Bench than the Bar. GLC CBE believes legal studies are the means to an end, for, it is the law graduates who have the power to transform our society with their knowledge, skill and sense of purpose. The Govt. Law College, Coimbatore is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, Chennai from the academic year 1997-1998.

The Government Law College, Coimbatore located at GEE DEE Hopt. Buildings, Avinashi Road, Coimbatore-641 014, commenced to function from August 1979. Later in January 1980, it was shifted to 9-B, Race Course Road, Coimbatore-18 and it functioned there till January 1991.

Presently the College is housed in its own campus at Maruthamalai, adjacent to the Bharathiar University. The present campus has a total area of 20.12 acres. Built-in lush green mountainous, airy, clean and calm atmosphere at the foothills of the Western Ghats, the campus is ideally suitable for one who wants to pursue a legal education. Adjacent to the College, two hostels for men & women students have also been constructed.

Dr Ambedkar Law University

Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature [Act No.43 of 1997] established the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in learning, teaching and research in the field of law. His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, former President of India inaugurated it on September 20, 1997, and the University started from October 3, 1997 onwards. The University was named after the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and University Grants Commission (UGC) (Sec. 2f and 12b of the UGC Act.).

The University is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Common Wealth Universities, U.K. and Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi. This University is functioning as nodal agency to uplift the legal education in the State of Tamil Nadu. The University is the first full-fledged sui generis Law University in the country; it is unique among all the Law Universities in the Country. The University is the first full-fledged Law University that offers Legal Education only through this University and its affiliated colleges in the State and the University is the first of its kind not only in the country but also in South Asia.

The University offers legal education at its campus as well as through eight affiliated colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu located at Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Vellore and Salem. The School of Excellence in Law established by the University at its campus in 2002 has been modelled on the lines of other National Law Schools in the country and offers three year as well as five years integrated undergraduate courses in Law. The University has a Postgraduate and Research Centre, which offers Master of Law Degree Courses in eight different specializations, doctoral programmes as well as organizing research in diverse areas of law. Apart from these, there is also a Distance Education Unit as well as a few evening college programmes for various postgraduate diploma courses.

Government Law College, Tirunelveli

Government Law College, Tirunelveli started in the year 1996, is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University, Chennai is a pioneer institution catering to the needs of the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu. It offers five year BA LL.B.  Integrated degree program, three-year LL.B.  Degree program and two year LL.M. degree program in Constitutional Law and Human Rights.

Over the years, this institution has produced eminent jurists, erudite scholars, impeccable judges, socially responsible lawyers, intelligent academicians, politicians and bureaucrats with integrity. This institution boasts of a robust legal education system with law teachers of high calibre who dedicate themselves to the welfare of the students and are highly motivated to prepare our students for transnational practice. This college has a well-developed library, e-zone, wonderful Moot Club, Debating Club and a Current Affairs Club apart from a vibrant – sports association, National Service Scheme and Youth Red Cross.
