THE HINDU: “Voice of dissent in a democracy cannot be shut down, the bench observed. “We are trying to find out whether this process (disqualification) was permissible or not.”
The same bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, B R Gavai, and Krishna Murari is also hearing a suo moto criminal contempt case against advocate Prashant Bhushan over two of his tweets, which the court says had “brought the administration of justice in disrepute”.

THE HINDU: A sessions court in Jaipur has directed a Metropolitan Magistrate to send a complaint about investigation in a credit society scam, allegedly involving Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, to the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Rajasthan police. The complaint had sought a probe into Mr Shekhawat’s role as an accused.
Set up a High Court for Puducherry
THE HINDU: In 1962, when Puducherry was merged with India, the jurisdiction of the Madras High Court was extended to it. After several decades, in 2017, the Puducherry legislature unanimously resolved to have its own High Court, and the Madras High Court was informed on July 7, 2017. Prior to this, in April 2017, the Pondicherry Bar Association also passed a resolution seeking the establishment of the High Court.
So, why should there be the need for a High Court at Puducherry? The Puducherry government spends exorbitant sums of money towards expenses of the large High Court. With not much of a population, this amount can be reduced to less than a quarter of the amount spent with a much smaller High Court for Puducherry.
What is plea bargaining and how does it work?
THE HINDU: Many members of the Tablighi Jamaat belonging to different countries have obtained release from court cases in recent days by means of plea bargaining. Accused of violating visa conditions by attending a religious congregation in Delhi, these foreign nationals have walked free after pleading guilty to minor offences and paying the fines imposed by the court. These cases have brought the focus on plea bargaining as a practice by which time-consuming trials can be avoided. Even though plea bargaining is available to those accused of criminal offences in India for over a decade, it is not yet common.
COVID Biomedical Waste Management: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court (SC) in a July 21, 2020 order directed for a meeting to be held to discuss steps taken over clearing biomedical waste of patients suffering from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The meeting must include representatives from the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, the court said. It must also include the requisite stakeholders of the concerned departments of the Union government, Delhi government and the representatives of the corporations.

SC proposes setting up a relief fund for advocates facing financial difficulties due to COVID-19
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday took note of the financial difficulties faced by advocates due to the online functioning of courts amid the COVID pandemic, which has led to a smaller number of cases getting listed for hearing.
A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde said the unprecedented crisis required an unprecedented resolution and issued notices to the Bar Council of India (BCI), the central government, all state bar councils and bar associations across the country to explore the possibility of setting up a relief fund for deserving and eligible advocates.

If she is elevated to the top court now, she will be in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027 for a period of eight months.
