Members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) state chapter have called for zero tolerance against violent attacks and physical assaults on doctors and hospital properties.
Dr Prabhu Kumar Challagali, president of IMA-Hyderabad, said Tamil Nadu government has brought in a new regulation that allowed swift action against offenders. Addressing a meeting to discuss the spate of attacks on doctors and medical facilities, he said in almost all cases of attacks, offenders go scot-free in the absence of strict laws.
“At present, if a case of doctor’s attack has crossed 3-7 years, the offender can get a station bail which means that the station house officer himself can write a bail and the offender will not even be taken to court. Instead, what we need is to make it a cognizable offence,” he said.
He said: “What is happening now is that small hospitals, clinics and nursing homes which cannot afford security apparatus end up losing property.” The Indian Medical Association (IMA) members said they approached the government authorities in the past but no action has been taken so far.
