1. Background of the Incident

Gangster Jitendra alias Gogi was shot dead inside the Rohini court on Friday. Two attackers, who posed as lawyers, had opened fire at Jitendra, killing him on the spot. The two attackers, believed to belong to a rival gang headed by Sunil alias Tillu Tajpuriya, were also killed in a swift police counter-fire. Sources told that gangster Tillu, who is currently lodged in Mandoli jail, had planned the shootout inside the Rohini court. The two attackers, who were shot dead by police, had visited Rohini court premises two days before the shootout, sources said. According to sources, the two shooters were hired by Tillu and his close aides – Sunil Rathi and Naveen Bali – to kill gangster Gogi. Sunil Rathi, who is currently lodged in Baghpat jail, is a friend of Tillu Tajpuria. Rathi had hired Rahul alias Nitin, one of the attackers from Baghpat, to execute the shootout, sources said. Naveen Bali, another wanted criminal in Delhi who belonged to the Tillu gang, had hired the second attacker to carry out the shootout, sources said. Jitender Maan, alias Gogi, who carried a reward of Rs 6.5 lakh on his head, was arrested along with his three accomplices from Gurgaon by a team of Special Cell in March last year, according to police.

Advocate Sunil Tomar, who was present in the courtroom for his client’s bail matters, said there were 15-17 people in the court of judge Gagandeep Singh when the incident happened.

2. CJI Expresses Concern

Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana has expressed deep concern at the incident, where three gangsters were killed in a shootout inside a courtroom of Rohini court complex on Friday. The incident also left several people injured and raised serious questions on the loopholes in the security arrangements on the court complexes.

The newspaper mentioned CJI spoke to the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in connection with this incident and advised him to talk to both police and the Bar to ensure that the functioning of the court is not affected.

The top court is already examining a matter in connection with the safety and security of court complexes and judicial personnel. According to senior police officials, gunmen dressed as lawyers, were present inside the court, shot gangster Jitender Gogi thrice, killing him. Special police personnel escorting the gangster then fired back, killing both the attackers on the spot.

Jitender Maan alias ‘Gogi’ who was shot dead in a witness box in a courtroom, was the most wanted gangster involved in umpteen kidnappings and murders. Gogi, who was arrested by the Special Cell in April, was involved in the killing of a Haryana-based singer, who was gunned down by assailants in Panipat in 2017. Gogi carried a reward of Rs 2.5 lakh on his head in Haryana.

3. New Petition for Court Security

A day after three people, including gangster Jitender Gogi, were killed in a shootout at the Rohini court complex in the national capital, a lawyer has moved the Supreme Court seeking concrete steps for the protection of judicial officers, court staff and lawyers. Petitioner Vishal Tiwari cited similar incidents in Bijnor, Barwani, Amritsar and Hisar to emphasise the fact that it was not the first incident of this kind.

4. Suggestions Forwarded

Vishal Tiwari demanded that hardcore criminals be produced through video conferencing before the trial courts from jails, instead of producing them physically in the courts.

Security and CCTV Cameras should be installed in the District Court complexes of our country, so that every incident may be caught in its true Scene and occurrence.

In the rural areas and District Courts, many litigants come with their aides in large numbers in order to pressurize the other side. Such unwanted mob or persons shall not be permitted with any litigant in the Court premises.
