Supreme Court dismisses plea to postpone NEET-PG 2022

NEET-PG-2022

Centre tells court that any delay in holding exam – scheduled to be held on May 21 – would impact patient care.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed petitions seeking postponement of the 2022 NEET-Post Graduate examinations saying any change to the May 21 date “will create chaos and uncertainty and create a deficiency of doctors in hospitals”.

The Bench

A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant said that over 2 lakh doctors have registered for the exam and they will be put to prejudice if the exam is further postponed.

“Reliefs sought in these proceedings cannot be granted. Petitions are therefore dismissed,” the bench said.

Though the petitioners contended that the postponement will not cause any prejudice to anyone, the court said it must be borne in mind that there are students who have registered.

Turning down the petitions, the court said the request cannot be entertained as it would also affect patient care and doctors’ careers.

Opposing the petitions, the Centre told the court that serious deliberations were held and it was decided on May 10 that the exam should not be postponed in the public interest and in the interest of medical education.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the government, told the court that any delay would impact patient care since this will lead to fewer resident doctors.
